Wind and Dust Storms

Most of the time, wind is not a problem, but storms can produce 70mph gusts. Most wind comes from the southwest, coming from approximately the 5:30 axis of the city. Any shelter should be designed to withstand these forces. A dome blowing across the playa can be quite dangerous.

Dust storms are the most common problem when the wind picks up. They can produce near white-out conditions.

  • If you don't have a dust mask dust mask, any strip of cloth will do.
  • If you're near your camp, get there quick to make sure things don't fly away. EZ-Ups and other shade tents have a strong tendency to do this.
  • Watch for art cars. They're not supposed to be driving around, but still do.
  • Just wait and enjoy the show.

Rain

Rain is extremely rare. If a rainstorm hits, it shouldn't last more than 15 minutes, and the playa will quickly dry out afterwards. However, when it does occur, ran can cause a number of problems:

  • The playa surface gets extremely slick when it's wet. (This also happens after water trucks drive by.
  • Many camp items can get soaked, waterlogged, and completely saturated with playa mud. Rugs are particularly susceptible.
