"Playa" is a term used to refer to an alkali flat or dry lakebed. In the context of Burning Man, it is often used interchangeably with "Black Rock City" and "Burning Man." For example: "I'm getting to the playa on Tuesday."
"Playa" is most often used to refer to the desert surface. It is usually extremely flat, dry, and cracked as in the photo to the right. Specific conditions vary from year to year. Ideal conditions are for it to be very hardpacked with very little give or dust. However, some years, the surface can be a little softer, producing significantly more dust, and making biking a little more difficult.
