Glow Sticks
Glow sticks are great for many reasons - including being cheap, easy, giftable, and iconic. Although perceived as wasteful because they are made of plastic, the advantages of simplicity and quality of light mean that you should be wearing at least one piece of "glow" in addition to any other radical illumination while wondering the playa at night.
However, there's a big downside: a significant amount of the MOOP found on the playa is either glow sticks or connectors, and most cheap glow sticks don't last long. Over the course of a week, a battery powered light or EL wire will probably be both less expensive and more practical in the long run.
Safety
Glowy and blinky stuff is an essential part of nighttime fashion and safety.
