It's easy to do without a generator, but having one for a larger camp can be useful, particularly for lighting your kitchen area and recharging camera batteries and such.
Soundproofing Your Generator
The biggest drawback of having a generator is that it likely to be noisy. Having a chugging generator next to your camp can be maddening, whether it's yours or your neighbor's. There are quiet and ultra-quiet models for sale, but these tend to be more expensive. If you can't afford a quiet or ultra-queit model, you can soundproof your generator by building baffles around it.
